How we rate them

A prospect is worth his draft slot first: scouts watched him closely. That slot is then corrected, season after season, by what he produces. His points are translated into NHL points with a factor for each league, measured on players who went from that league to the NHL the next season. The younger he is for his league, the more that output counts. For defensemen, points say less; for goalies, nothing: their value stays mostly that of their draft slot, age and NHL games.

The result is expected WAR from age 21 to 26: the same window for everyone, so an 18-year-old compares with a 22-year-old. Potential is the ceiling (what the best 10% of the most similar past prospects produced), on the scouts' 20-80 scale; NHL probability is the share of those prospects who played 200 NHL games. Our WAR only goes back to 2022-23: for older seasons, we use an equivalent from games and points (or save percentage), fitted on 2022-2026.

The test: drafts the model never saw

Fitted on the 2005-2013 drafts, tested on 2014-2019: correlation with the WAR actually produced, and mean error, compared with draft slot alone.
