William Lagesson's story
Raised through the Frölunda HC system, William Lagesson left Sweden early to pursue a North American path after two seasons in J20 SuperElit. His draft year ended with Edmonton selecting him in the fourth round, 91st overall, at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. That summer he also entered the USHL Entry Draft and was taken 11th overall by the Dubuque Fighting Saints as he prepared for the move overseas.
Lagesson spent 2014–15 in the USHL, then committed to UMass Amherst, where he played two seasons in Hockey East. Opting to turn pro after his sophomore year, he signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Edmonton Oilers on 7 April 2017. Immediately after signing, Edmonton arranged for him to play the 2017–18 season back in Sweden on loan with Djurgårdens IF in the SHL, where he established himself as a regular on the blue line and posted 13 points in 49 regular-season games.
He returned to North America for the Oilers' camp and was assigned to the Bakersfield Condors to open 2018–19. With the 2020–21 season delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lagesson signed a one-year contract with HC Vita Hästen in HockeyAllsvenskan on 23 September 2020, producing 12 points in 14 games. He later split time between Edmonton and Bakersfield in 2021–22 before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens on 21 March 2022 as part of the deal that sent Brett Kulak to Edmonton.
After his contract with Montreal expired he signed a one-year, two-way deal with Carolina on 25 July 2022 but spent 2022–23 with the AHL's Chicago Wolves, scoring 10 goals and 32 points in 65 games. On 1 July 2023 he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, began the season with the Marlies, was recalled and played 30 NHL games before being claimed off waivers by the Anaheim Ducks on 9 March 2024. He finished that season in Anaheim and on 1 July 2024 signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, subsequently being assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins for 2024–25.
Internationally, Lagesson represented Sweden at the World Junior Championships in 2015 and 2016, featuring in the bronze-medal games both years and scoring in the 2016 contest. On the ice he is a right-shot defenceman noted for steady defensive play, reliable positioning and occasional offensive contribution on transition.
