Vasily Ponomarev's story
Growing up in Moscow and coming through Orbita Zelenograd, Ponomaryov moved quickly into organised junior hockey in Russia before heading overseas. After a season with MHK Krylia Sovetov in the MHL in 2018, he was taken ninth in the 2019 CHL Import Draft by the Shawinigan Cataractes and joined the QMJHL to continue his development.
In Shawinigan he showed a consistent scoring touch: 18 goals and 31 assists in 57 games in 2019–20, then 10 goals and 28 assists in 33 contests in 2020–21. Those numbers helped him earn a second-round selection, 53rd overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft; the club signed him to a three-year entry-level contract on 13 October 2020.
Ponomaryov’s professional path alternated between Russia and North America. The Hurricanes loaned him to HC Spartak Moscow on 9 June 2021 and he made his KHL debut in the 2021–22 season. In April 2022 he was assigned to the Chicago Wolves and was part of the Wolves’ 2022 Calder Cup victory. He reached the NHL on 5 January 2024, debuting for Carolina with a goal and an assist against Washington. On 7 March 2024 he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of a multi-player deal. On 11 June 2025, as a pending restricted free agent, he signed a three-year contract to return to the KHL with Avangard Omsk.
Internationally, Ponomaryov has often been among Russia’s offensive leaders at youth tournaments. He led his squad in scoring at the 2017 World U-17 Hockey Challenge with four goals and four assists in six games, winning gold. In 2019 he collected points en route to gold at both the Hlinka Gretzky Cup (2g, 3a) and the World Junior A Challenge (1g, 3a). At the 2021 World Junior Championships he led Russia in goals with three in seven games and he also appeared in the 2022 tournament before its cancellation.
On the ice he is primarily known for producing goals and setting up teammates, a profile reflected in his junior point totals and his scoring contributions for Russia’s youth teams. A forward who blends finishing and playmaking, his offensive instincts have driven his career between the KHL and the NHL.
