Raised on the family farm between Dresden and Chatham, T. J. Brodie came up through small-town Ontario hockey before moving into the junior ranks. He spent time with the Leamington Flyers at the Junior B level and then became a full-time defenceman with the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL, where his development and increasing point totals led the Calgary Flames to select him 114th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
