Tyson Barrie's story
Growing up split between Victoria and a spell in Florida, Tyson Barrie learned his early hockey in Long Beach and on Vancouver Island before moving into major junior ranks with the Kelowna Rockets late in 2006–07. The son of former NHLer Len Barrie, he quickly emerged as an offensive-minded defenceman and earned a spot on the CHL All-Rookie Team after his first full WHL season.
Selected 64th overall by the Colorado Avalanche at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Barrie returned to Kelowna and played a leading role in the Rockets' 2009 Ed Chynoweth Cup run. His junior résumé includes the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as WHL Defenceman of the Year in 2009–10 and serving as Kelowna's captain before signing a three-year entry-level deal with Colorado on 25 March 2011.
Barrie's professional path began in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters, and he made his NHL debut on 7 February 2012. He established himself offensively with the Avalanche over multiple seasons, setting team milestones (including overtime and game-winning tallies) and producing career highs in 2017–18 with 57 points in 68 games, highlighted by a five-point night on 20 February 2018 and an 11-game point streak. Colorado traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs on 1 July 2019.
After a season in Toronto, Barrie signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers on 10 October 2020 and led all NHL defencemen with 48 points that season, later inking a three-year deal on 28 July 2021. On 28 February 2023 he was dealt to the Nashville Predators as part of a package for Mattias Ekholm. Unsigned in free agency after the 2023–24 season, he accepted a professional tryout with the Calgary Flames on 10 September 2024.
Barrie's game is defined by his offensive instincts from the back end: playmaking ability, power-play running, and a knack for generating points. Across his career he has been relied upon to jump into the attack and drive possession from the blue line, while his teams have occasionally asked for adjustments to his defensive responsibilities.
