Rasmus Kupari's story
Born in Kotka on 15 March 2000, Kupari broke into pro hockey as a teenager in Finland. He made his Liiga debut for Oulu on 14 September 2017 and scored his first league goal on 28 September 2017. As an 18-year-old rookie he finished that season with six goals and 14 points in 39 games, a record that put him on NHL scouts’ radars.
Eligible for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, he was taken in the first round, 20th overall, by the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings signed him to a three-year entry-level contract on 13 July 2018, formally starting his tenure within that organization and paving the way for a move to North America.
Kupari reached the NHL level in 2021: he played his first NHL game on 5 March 2021 with Los Angeles and recorded his first NHL goal on 8 May 2021 against the Colorado Avalanche. His path took a significant turn on 27 June 2023, when he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets in a deal that also involved Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo and a 2024 second-round pick, with Pierre-Luc Dubois going the other way.
As a restricted free agent he agreed to a two-year contract extension worth US$2 million on 2 August with the Jets. After his stint in the NHL, Kupari signed a two-year deal with HC Lugano of Switzerland’s National League on 3 June 2025, electing to continue his career in Europe.
On the ice, Kupari’s early Liiga output highlighted his scoring touch as a young centre and demonstrated an ability to contribute offensively. His progression from Finnish professional hockey to the NHL and then to the Swiss National League reflects a player who has adapted his game across different levels and competitive environments.
