Patrick Maroon's story

Raised in St. Louis, Patrick Maroon left Oakville High School early to pursue junior hockey and spent his youth with the St. Louis Amateur Blues, even skating in the Quebec pee-wee tournament in 2002. Early on his size stood out and he worked on skill in unconventional ways—practising stickhandling with a golf ball in his garage and logging extra skating and roller sessions—to round out a heavy physical profile with better puck skills.

A pair of strong seasons in the NAHL with the Texarkana Bandits put him on the map: after trimming weight and boosting his point totals, he helped the Bandits win the Robertson Cup and earned NAHL honours before being selected 161st overall by Philadelphia in 2007. Instead of pursuing the NCAA route he had once considered, Maroon joined the London Knights in the OHL, led the team in scoring and took the step into pro hockey with the Phantoms late in that season.

Maroon spent several years developing in the AHL before being traded to Anaheim in November 2010. He worked his way into the Ducks' lineup and became a regular NHL player by the 2013–14 season. Subsequent moves saw him skate for Edmonton and New Jersey, and he signed a one-year deal with St. Louis in 2018. That lone season with the Blues ended in a first franchise Stanley Cup in 2019.

He then added two more consecutive Cup rings with Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021, becoming part of a rare run of three straight championships. Internationally, Maroon represented the United States at the 2016 IIHF World Championship and had earlier competed for his country in inline hockey, a dual-background that punctuates his diverse playing history.

On the ice Maroon is plainspoken in his impact: a big winger who plays physically along the boards, screens and battles in front of the net, and creates space for teammates. Across roles and teams he has alternated between checking minutes and opportunities to contribute offensively, carving a niche as a power-oriented forward.
