Oliver Wahlstrom's story

At nine he grabbed the spotlight with a shootout goal before a Boston Bruins game — an early sign of a player who grew up in Cumberland, Maine, and developed between American and Swedish influences. His father, Joakim, who played at the University of Maine and later in Sweden, gave him a direct connection to both hockey cultures; Oliver holds dual U.S. and Swedish citizenship.

As a teenager he spent two seasons with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (2016–17 and 2017–18), finishing his final year as an alternate captain for the U18 squad. He made unusually early college commitments — first to Maine at age 13, later shifting to Harvard and ultimately enrolling at Boston College. In his freshman season with the Eagles he registered 8 goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 36 games.

The New York Islanders chose him 11th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. After one college season he signed a three‑year entry‑level contract with the Islanders on 28 March 2019 and debuted in the NHL on 14 October 2019 against the St. Louis Blues. During the pandemic year he was loaned to AIK in Sweden on 31 August 2020 and returned to the Islanders on 14 December.

He scored his first NHL goal on 28 January 2021 versus the Washington Capitals and recorded his first multi‑point game on 28 February 2021 against Pittsburgh. His first playoff goal came on 22 May 2021 on the power play at Nassau Coliseum. In July 2024 he signed a one‑year extension with New York; the 2024–25 season saw him placed on waivers and claimed by Boston on 14 December 2024, after which he made 16 appearances with the Bruins before finishing the year in Providence (AHL). As a free agent he signed an AHL deal with the San Jose Barracuda on 16 September 2025 and later agreed to a one‑year contract with Djurgårdens IF of the SHL on 15 September 2026.

Wahlstrom’s game is built around a quick, accurate shot and an ability to finish close to the net. His time with the national program and stints in Europe have produced an attacking winger comfortable with both even‑strength chances and power‑play moments.
