Marc-Edouard Vlasic's story

Growing up in the Montreal area, Vlasic was coached by his father and entered organized hockey at five. He moved up quickly through local tiers, reaching midget AAA with Lac St. Louis and later the West Island Lions, which set the stage for a jump to major junior.

Quebec selected him in the fourth round of the 2003 QMJHL draft after his Lac St. Louis coach, Guy Boucher, persuaded Patrick Roy to pick him. Vlasic spent the 2003–04 season with the Remparts following a two-game stint with the Lions and was later added to the CHL Canada–Russia Series roster in 2004 as Sidney Crosby's replacement.

The San Jose Sharks chose Vlasic 35th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, a pick acquired in the deal involving Miikka Kiprusoff. He made his NHL debut on October 5, 2006, versus the St. Louis Blues and scored his first NHL goal on November 22, 2006, against the Los Angeles Kings, becoming one of the youngest Sharks defencemen to hit that milestone. Vlasic closed his rookie campaign with 3 goals and 23 assists in 81 games and earned a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team.

Vlasic signed multiple contract extensions with San Jose (2008, 2012, 2017) and delivered several notable moments: scoring his first playoff goal in 2013, playing in the 2016 Stanley Cup Final, and reaching 1,000 NHL games on December 14, 2019—having spent his first thousand games with one club. A preseason upper-back issue delayed his 2024 camp start; he then appeared in a career-low 27 regular-season games the following season. After 2024–25 the Sharks placed him on unconditional waivers and bought out the remaining year of his deal, ending a 19-year run in San Jose.

Internationally, Vlasic was a member of Canada’s Olympic team in 2014 and earned a gold medal. On the ice he has been defined by steady defensive positioning and shot-blocking, traits that underpinned a long tenure on a single NHL blue line.
