Max Pacioretty's story

Growing up in New Canaan, Connecticut, Max Pacioretty moved quickly through school and junior hockey ranks before reaching the NCAA. After seasons at New Canaan High School and Taft School, he spent 2006–07 with the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL, a campaign that helped propel him to the University of Michigan, where he scored 15 goals in 2007–08 and earned recognition in his college conference.

Selected 22nd overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, Pacioretty signed an entry-level deal in July 2008 and made his NHL debut on January 2, 2009, tallying a goal on his first shot while becoming the first player in franchise history to wear number 67. Early professional development included time with the Hamilton Bulldogs, but he soon established himself as a full-time NHL forward for Montreal.

His tenure with the Canadiens featured scoring consistency—multiple 30-goal campaigns—and significant moments: the March 2011 hit that caused a severe neck fracture and concussion, his comeback that earned the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance after the 2011–12 season, and eventual appointment as team captain in 2015. In September 2018 Montreal traded him to the Vegas Golden Knights in a multi-piece deal; he later signed an extension with Vegas and produced strong offensive totals over four seasons.

Cap hits and roster needs led Vegas to trade him to Carolina in July 2022. Achilles injuries curtailed his time with the Hurricanes, and after a one-year stint with Washington in 2023–24 he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2024–25. That season proved to be his last as a player: he hinted at stepping away to be closer to family and ultimately retired, moving into a coaching role at Michigan in September 2025.

Pacioretty’s game was straightforward and productive: a goal-scorer who sought the dirty areas in front of the net, relied on shot and positioning, and showed a capacity to return to form after major injuries—traits that shaped a long NHL career.
