Lucas Carlsson's story

Born 5 July 1997 in Gävle, Lucas Carlsson rose through Swedish hockey before reaching the professional ranks. He began playing at senior level with Brynäs IF and made his SHL debut in the 2014–15 season, spending several campaigns there to establish himself on the blue line.

Selected 110th overall in the fourth round by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Carlsson stayed in Sweden to continue his development. After four seasons with Brynäs, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with Chicago on 21 May 2018, opening the next chapter of his career in North America.

During the pandemic-delayed 2020–21 season, Carlsson appeared in 12 games for the Blackhawks and recorded one assist before being traded to the Florida Panthers on 8 April 2021 alongside Lucas Wallmark, in a deal that sent several players and a draft pick the other way. With Florida, he reached a personal milestone by scoring his first NHL goal on 2 December 2021 against the Buffalo Sabres.

As a pending free agent, he agreed to a two-year, two-way contract with the San Jose Sharks on 1 July 2024, a type of deal that allows movement between the NHL club and its AHL affiliate. He was recalled from the San Jose Barracuda on 21 March 2025 and, the following day, scored the game-winning goal in his first appearance with the Sharks since 1 November 2022.

In May 2026 Carlsson returned to Sweden, signing a four-year contract with Djurgårdens IF in the SHL. Listed and used as a defenceman throughout his career, he has alternated between European top-level play and the North American professional system, adapting to roles at both NHL and AHL levels.

How we rate →

PAL Rating scores performance from 0 to 100 against players at the same position (50 = average player), starting from the player's strength, offensive or defensive. Value Rating compares that performance with what the player costs: 50 means paid what the play is worth.

Wins added to the team, compared with a replacement-level player called up from the AHL.
