Kevin Labanc's story

Kevin Labanc first skated competitively at the Staten Island rink and, as a boy, took part in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Tournament with a New Jersey minor team. He worked his way through local youth circuits and the New Jersey Rockets in the AJHL before earning a spot in the United States National Development Program in the USHL.

Rather than pursue college hockey, Labanc headed to major junior with the Barrie Colts in the OHL, who had selected him in the 2011 Priority Selection, 103rd overall. After a modest rookie year he broke out with back-to-back 100-point campaigns; his overage season in 2015–16 produced 127 points and 88 assists, performances that brought several OHL honours including the Jim Mahon Trophy, the Eddie Powers Award, the Leo Lalonde Trophy and a place on the league’s second all-star team.

San Jose signed him to a three-year entry-level deal on 9 March 2016. He made a single pro appearance with the AHL’s Barracuda before opening 2016–17 in the AHL; a strong start prompted a recall on 7 November 2016 and his NHL debut on 8 November against Washington. His first NHL goal came on 17 November 2016 against St. Louis. Highlights that followed include a hat-trick on 9 February 2019 and a 2018–19 campaign with 17 goals and 56 points. In the 2019 playoffs he recorded an unprecedented four points in a single period of a Game 7 against Vegas, and San Jose advanced before eventually being stopped by St. Louis in the Western Conference Final. The Sharks re-signed him in 2019 and again in 2020.

As his NHL tenure cooled, Labanc accepted a professional tryout with New Jersey in September 2024, produced six goals in four preseason games, and then signed a one-year contract with Columbus on 5 October 2024. A later tryout with Carolina ended without a roster spot, and on 8 October 2025 he signed with the Shanghai Dragons for the remainder of the 2025–26 KHL season.

In plain terms, Labanc is a playmaker with strong passing instincts and an ability to rack up assists; he showed a consistent scoring touch in junior and has alternated between creator and complementary goal-scorer at the professional level.
