In 2024-25, Kyle Burroughs, 31, posts a PAL Rating of 19 out of 100 (very poor), and his WAR of -0.2 ranks 255th among 314 regulars, in the bottom quarter.
On the other hand, discipline (0, among the weakest in the league) and shooting (20, well below average) hold him back.
Breaking down his WAR (goals above average), his biggest contribution: EV defense (+0.1); his biggest cost: penalties (-1.4).
A slight dip from 2023-24, when his PAL was 24; his WAR went from 0.0 to -0.2.
Contract-wise, his Value score of 28 (poor return) weighs his output against what he costs: 50 is what that salary should buy.
Growing up in British Columbia, Kyle Burroughs learned his hockey in the provincial minor system and developed into a physical, right‑side defenceman who shows leadership off the ice as well as on it.
Drafted into the WHL by the Regina Pats in 2010, Burroughs worked his way through major junior with Regina and later Medicine Hat. A strong junior stretch around 2013 raised his profile and led to his selection in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders. With Regina he earned the team’s top defenceman award twice and served as captain before turning pro.
Burroughs began his professional career in 2015 within the Islanders organization, splitting time between the ECHL and the AHL with Bridgeport. He carved out a role that included powerplay and penalty‑kill duties and earned team recognition for community work, twice being named Sound Tigers AHL Man of the Year. Injuries and at least one suspension are part of his record, and he later moved through several NHL organizations: traded to Colorado where he made his NHL debut and recorded his first NHL point, then signed with Vancouver, later joining San Jose and Los Angeles, and ultimately signing with Dallas.
Internationally, Burroughs represented British Columbia at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, winning a gold medal, and was selected for Team Pacific at the 2012 World U‑17 Hockey Challenge, gaining early experience against top peers.
On the ice he is straightforward to describe: a versatile, physical defender who can contribute on the third wave of the powerplay, take on penalty‑killing responsibilities and wear a leadership role when asked, while also being noted for community involvement by his AHL clubs.
