Joey Anderson's story
Raised through Minnesota prep hockey and the US development system, Joey Anderson arrived at the college level with a profile built on two distinct school stints and steady production. Coming out of Hill‑Murray School he joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, then moved on to play collegiately for the Minnesota–Duluth Bulldogs after graduating high school.
Selected 73rd overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils, Anderson elected to stay in college to refine his game. At Minnesota–Duluth he had decisive moments in postseason play: he scored the game‑winner in the 2017 NCHC Frozen Faceoff final, earned a spot on the NCHC All‑Rookie Team and was part of the Bulldogs' 2018 NCAA championship run.
Anderson signed an entry‑level contract with New Jersey on 15 April 2018 and split time between the AHL's Binghamton team and the NHL club. He made his NHL debut in October 2018 and tallied his first NHL goal the following month. Traded to Toronto in October 2020, he spent significant time with the Marlies, leading that club in goals in 2021‑22 and serving in a leadership role there.
On 27 February 2023 he was dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks in a multi‑asset trade and has since divided his time between Chicago and the Rockford IceHogs. After being recalled during the 2023‑24 campaign and appearing in 55 games with the Blackhawks, he became an unrestricted free agent when Chicago did not tender a qualifying offer; the team then signed him to a two‑year contract on 1 July 2024.
Anderson's value is straightforward: he plays a hard forechecking game, accepts defensive assignments and brings physicality and work ethic to the bottom six. He is most often used as a responsible, checking‑line forward who can chip in secondary offence while limiting the opponents' chances.
