Grant Hutton's story
Growing up in Carmel, Indiana, Grant Hutton learned the game in youth programs such as the Indiana Junior Ice U16, where he showed early offensive instincts from the back end. After being selected in the USHL Entry Draft by the Indiana Ice, he split time across junior circuits, moving between the USHL and the NAHL with stops that included Corpus Christi IceRays, Janesville Jets, Tri‑City Storm and Des Moines Buccaneers. Those seasons established him as a dependable defenseman comfortable in varied roles.
Hutton matriculated at Miami University and played four seasons with the RedHawks from 2015 to 2019 while enrolled at the Farmer School of Business. As a freshman he registered his first NCAA assist in a 7–3 win over Providence and finished that year with five assists in 35 games, earning occasional NCHC weekly recognition. His sophomore campaign marked an offensive leap—9 goals and 9 assists for 18 points—including his first collegiate goal on October 7, 2016 against Providence and a notable goal streak in February that led to another Defenseman of the Week nod.
Elevated into leadership roles in his junior and senior years, Hutton served as an alternate captain and then captain in 2018–19. He turned in a breakout junior season with 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 36 games, becoming the first Miami defenseman to reach double‑digit goals since 1997–98, and capped his college career by leading Miami defensemen in scoring his final year with 7 goals and 14 assists in 37 games.
Turning pro, Hutton signed a one‑year entry‑level contract with the New York Islanders on March 21, 2019 and was assigned to their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport, debuting on March 27 and recording his first pro assist days later to help the Sound Tigers reach the 2019 Calder Cup playoffs. He earned an NHL recall on November 20, 2021 amid COVID‑related absences and made his NHL debut that night against Calgary, later scoring his first NHL goal on April 9, 2022 in St. Louis. Hutton's game is defined by a blend of defensive reliability and an ability to contribute offensively from the blue line.
