David Savard's story
Growing up in Saint‑Hyacinthe, David Savard came through Quebec’s minor circuits, skating in the Quebec International Pee‑Wee Tournament in the early 2000s and spending time in junior AAA before moving up to the QMJHL. Those foundation years in local programs set the stage for his jump to major junior competition.
With the Moncton Wildcats Savard established himself as a dependable stay‑at‑home defenceman, then broadened his game in his third junior season to become an all‑around blueliner. His breakout campaign in 2009–2010 earned him several league honours — including the Émile Bouchard and Kevin Lowe trophies — and recognition as the CHL’s top defenceman, as he led QMJHL defencemen in scoring and set an assists record for his position.
Selected 94th overall by Columbus in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Savard signed his first pro deal in 2010 and began in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons, where he finished among the top-scoring rookie defencemen. He made his NHL debut in the 2011–12 season and scored his first NHL goal in February 2012. Over the next years he carved out a regular role in Columbus, earning multi‑year contract extensions and producing a notably strong plus–minus during the 2016–17 season.
Near the 2021 trade deadline he was moved to Tampa Bay in a three‑team deal; he helped the Lightning capture the Stanley Cup that year, contributing five points in 20 playoff appearances and recording an assist on a Cup‑clinching play. That summer he signed a four‑year contract with the Montreal Canadiens on July 28, 2021. Injuries interrupted parts of his tenure in Montreal, but he was honoured twice with the Jacques Beauchamp‑Molson Trophy and reached the 800‑game mark before announcing he would retire after Montreal’s 2025 playoff exit.
On ice, Savard combined defensive positioning and physical reliability with the willingness to jump into the play when needed. His game was built on steadiness in his own end, smart outlet passing and occasional offensive contributions that complemented a long NHL career culminating in a Stanley Cup.
