Dylan McIlrath's story

Growing up in Winnipeg, Dylan McIlrath made a name for himself early by leaning into a physical game. Selected 46th overall in the WHL bantam draft, he joined the Moose Jaw Warriors in 2008 and developed into a stay-at-home defence presence, earning his club's most improved player award after a season with 24 points and a +19 rating.

McIlrath entered the NHL spotlight at the 2010 draft when the New York Rangers picked him 10th overall. He signed his first NHL contract with the Rangers on 17 March 2011 and spent his initial professional years moving between the NHL and the AHL, seeing time with Connecticut and later Hartford. His NHL debut came on 12 December 2013 against Columbus, and he scored his first NHL goal on 15 December 2015.

The next phase of his career involved several moves and AHL assignments. After making the Rangers' roster in 2015–16 — appearing in 34 games with 2 goals, 2 assists and 64 penalty minutes — McIlrath was placed on waivers and traded to the Florida Panthers on 8 November 2016 for Steven Kampfer and a conditional pick. On 1 March 2017 he was dealt to the Detroit Red Wings in the trade that brought Thomas Vanek to Florida; assigned to Grand Rapids, he helped the Griffins capture the 2017 Calder Cup.

McIlrath stayed within Detroit's organization through contract extensions and continued AHL duty before signing a two-year, two-way deal with the Washington Capitals on 28 July 2021. Washington extended him with another two-year, two-way contract on 2 July 2023 and later signed him to a two-year, one-way extension worth $1.6 million on 27 March 2025. His résumé includes Calder Cup victories with Grand Rapids in 2017 and subsequent Calder Cups with Hershey.

On the ice, McIlrath's identity is plain: physical defending, frequent fights and penalty minutes mark his play. As a junior he modelled aspects of his game on Shea Weber, favouring body play and on-ice protection of teammates.

WAR and PAL ratings, 2025-26

How we rate →

PAL Rating scores performance from 0 to 100 against players at the same position (50 = average player), starting from the player's strength, offensive or defensive. Value Rating compares that performance with what the player costs: 50 means paid what the play is worth.

Wins added to the team, compared with a replacement-level player called up from the AHL.
