Andrew Poturalski's story
Growing up in Williamsville, New York, Poturalski learned the game in local youth programs, skating for the Wheatfield Blades under former NHLer Peter Scamurra and later starring for Nichols School. He moved into junior hockey with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the OJHL, collecting 16 goals and 22 assists in 33 regular-season contests before a loan to Cedar Rapids in the USHL. Early setbacks — a broken ankle and then a fractured fibula during summer preparation — interrupted his rise, but he returned mid-season to the USHL and earned CCM Forward of the Week after a five-point game in October.
He joined the University of New Hampshire program and in 2015–16 led both the Wildcats and Hockey East in scoring with 52 points in 37 games. That campaign brought East First-Star Team honours and a spot among the Hobey Baker finalists; he left college early to sign a two-year entry-level deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on 9 March 2016 and turn pro.
Poturalski spent the bulk of his early pro years with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL. He made his NHL debut on 4 April 2017 in a game against the Minnesota Wild after a first recall, then returned to Charlotte to finish the season. The 2018–19 season was a breakout: 23 goals and 70 points in 72 games, a place on the AHL Second All-Star Team, and a dominant playoff run — 12 goals and 23 points — that culminated in the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy and the Calder Cup with Charlotte.
As a free agent he signed with Anaheim on 2 July 2019 and spent time with the San Diego Gulls before rejoining the Hurricanes organization on 11 August 2021. On 13 July 2022 he agreed to a two-year, $1.525 million contract with the Seattle Kraken; while in that system he helped the Coachella Valley Firebirds reach consecutive Calder Cup finals. On 3 July 2024 he signed a two-year, two-way deal with the San Jose Sharks and spent most of 2024–25 with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda.
The 2024–25 season with the Barracuda produced career highs — 30 goals and 73 points in 59 games — and he led the league in scoring for the third time, earning the Sollenberger Trophy for a third time and, for the first time, the Les Cunningham Award as regular-season MVP along with a First Team All-Star nod. Released from his Sharks contract on 30 May 2025 to pursue opportunities abroad, he signed a one-year deal with Avangard Omsk on 27 July 2025 for the 2025–26 KHL season. He and his wife Haley have two children.
