Ty Smith's story
Born in Lloydminster on March 24, 2000, Ty Smith began attracting attention well before reaching the professional ranks. Chosen first overall by the Spokane Chiefs in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, he earned his club’s rookie and scholastic honours in his first season. The following campaign brought a clear step forward: he set a franchise mark for most points in a single game by a defenceman, was named WHL Scholastic Player of the Year, and took home the Chiefs’ Defenceman of the Year award.
Smith entered the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and was selected in the first round, 17th overall, by the New Jersey Devils. He signed a three‑year entry‑level contract with New Jersey on August 20, 2018. After attending the Devils’ training camp he was returned to Spokane and on October 24 was appointed co‑captain of the Chiefs alongside Jaret Anderson‑Dolan.
He reached the NHL opening night roster for 2020–21 and made his debut on January 14, 2021, against the Boston Bruins, scoring his first NHL goal in a 3–2 shootout loss. Smith recorded a point in each of his first five NHL games — a run only behind Marek Židlický for rookies at his position — and had eight points in his first nine appearances before being placed on the COVID‑19 reserve list on February 2. His rookie season concluded with selection to the NHL All‑Rookie Team.
On July 16, 2022, the Devils traded Smith and a 2023 third‑round pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for John Marino. He split 2022–23 between Pittsburgh and the AHL’s Wilkes‑Barre/Scranton, then spent the full 2023–24 season in Wilkes‑Barre. Carolina acquired him on March 7, 2024, in a multi‑player deal; he remained with Wilkes‑Barre after the trade, finishing with 43 points in 63 games. The Hurricanes signed him to a one‑year, two‑way extension on June 21, 2024. Upon becoming a free agent, Smith left North America and on July 17, 2025 signed a one‑year contract with HC Dinamo Minsk of the KHL.
Internationally, Smith captained Team Canada at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics and served as an alternate captain at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. On the ice he is known as a right‑side defenceman who can generate offence from the blue line and who has repeatedly occupied leadership roles throughout his junior and professional career.
