Tyler Motte's story
A teenager from Port Huron first drew wider attention when he skated in the 2008 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a Detroit minor team — an early waypoint in Tyler Motte’s path. He moved through Detroit’s youth ranks, posting strong numbers with Honeybaked U16 and helping that club to a national title, then spent seasons with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program at U17 and U18 levels before heading to college.
Motte enrolled at the University of Michigan in 2013 and developed into a high-impact forward over three seasons. After steady production as a freshman and sophomore, his junior year produced 32 goals and 56 points in 38 games, long goal streaks and numerous weekly and national honours; he left college as an AHCA First Team All-American and a Hobey-Baker finalist to turn pro.
Chicago signed him to an entry-level deal in April 2016 and he split time between Rockford and the Blackhawks, scoring his first NHL goal that October. A major trade in June 2017 sent him to Columbus, and the next years featured several moves: stints with Vancouver — including his first full NHL season and notable playoff contributions in 2020 — followed by stops in New York, Ottawa and Tampa Bay. In July 2024 he signed a one-year contract with Detroit; later he took a training-camp tryout with Florida and then an AHL tryout with the Charlotte Checkers in October 2025.
Internationally, Motte represented the United States at U17 and U18 tournaments, earning silver medals and leading his team in goals at the 2013 U18 championship; he also played at the World Junior Championship and at the 2016 IIHF World Championship. On the ice he is defined by his work ethic and two-way play: a forward who blocks shots, kills penalties and finds timely goals, blending forecheck pressure with a willingness to do the gritty work that coaches expect from a depth forward.
