2023-24 season: 67 GP, 17 G, 14 A, 31 PTS, -35 +/-, 15:32 TOI. WAR -0.1 (482nd of 608) · PAL 8, very poor.
In 2023-24, Tyler Johnson, 36, posts a PAL Rating of 8 out of 100 (very poor), and his WAR of -0.1 ranks 482nd among 608 regulars, in the bottom quarter.
His strengths: power play (75, well above average), shooting (73, above average) and penalty kill (67, above average). On the other hand, possession (0, among the weakest in the league) and defense (8, among the weakest in the league) hold him back.
Breaking down his WAR (goals above average), his biggest contribution: finishing (+2.6); his biggest cost: EV defense (-2.6).
A marked decline: his PAL was 28 in 2022-23, against 8 now; his WAR, though, went from -0.6 to -0.1.
Growing up in Liberty Lake near Spokane, Tyler Johnson learned to skate with the help of his mother and rose through the WHL ranks with the Spokane Chiefs. He featured in the Chiefs’ 2008 championship run and their Memorial Cup victory, standing out in playoff situations as a teenager and earning playoff MVP honours. By 2010–11 he had his best junior season, surpassing 100 points and finishing among the league’s top goal scorers while collecting several postseason and seasonal accolades.
Passed over in the NHL Entry Draft, Johnson signed a three-year entry-level deal with Tampa Bay in March 2011 and began his pro career in the AHL. He was part of Norfolk’s Calder Cup-winning squad in 2012 and then starred with Syracuse, leading the AHL in goals and being named the league’s MVP. Tampa Bay called him up in March 2013; he made his NHL debut on March 14 and notched his first NHL goal two days later.
Johnson quickly became a key offensive piece for the Lightning. He posted 50 points as a rookie in 2013–14 and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team, then followed with a 72-point season in 2014–15 while centring the line known as “The Triplets” with Nikita Kucherov and Ondřej Palát and earning an All-Star nod. His 2015 playoff run included multiple multi-goal games, a club single-playoff high of 13 goals, and several franchise records, even as a broken wrist limited him in the Stanley Cup Final.
Over subsequent seasons Johnson climbed Tampa Bay’s franchise lists for goals and points, reached milestones including his 500th NHL game in December 2019, and helped the Lightning capture back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. On July 27, 2021, he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in a deal tied to Brent Seabrook’s contract, but injuries curtailed his time in Chicago and reduced his on-ice contributions.
In 2024 he accepted a professional tryout with Boston, signed a one-year contract in November, and recorded two assists across nine games before his contract was terminated in December; he cleared waivers and became a free agent. Unsigned thereafter, Johnson announced his retirement on July 7, 2025. Internationally he won gold with the United States at the 2010 World Junior Championships (three goals, five points) and earned his first senior appearances in 2014, including a two-goal game versus Germany. His style blended quickness, goal-scoring instinct and an ability to produce in high-stakes moments.
