Travis Dermott's story
Growing up in Newmarket, Ontario, Travis Dermott rose through the local minor ranks before joining the Ontario Hockey League with the Erie Otters; his first full OHL season earned him a spot on the 2013–14 OHL First All-Rookie Team and set the stage for his professional entry the following year.
Dermott increased his offensive output with Erie over successive seasons — reaching 45 points in 61 games and recording a notable assist streak — which elevated his draft stock. The Toronto Maple Leafs selected him 34th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and signed him to a three-year entry-level deal on July 22, 2015. He also wore the maple leaf for Canada at the 2016 IIHF World U20 Championship.
Turning pro with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies in 2016, Dermott opened his AHL account with a goal and an assist in his debut on October 16, 2016. Used extensively on the penalty kill and often deployed on the right side despite shooting left, he split time between the Marlies and the Maple Leafs before sticking with Toronto long enough to score his first NHL goal on January 31, 2018. After Toronto’s NHL playoff exit in 2018 he rejoined the Marlies and played a part in the club’s first Calder Cup championship.
Dermott signed short-term extensions in October 2020 and July 2021, then was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on March 20, 2022. A concussion in September 2022 curtailed his availability and he ended the 2022–23 campaign injured; Vancouver declined to tender a qualifying offer, and he reached unrestricted free agency. In July 2023 he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes.
During Arizona’s October 21, 2023 home opener, Dermott defied the NHL’s then-new restriction on Pride-themed tape; after review by the league and the players’ association, the restriction was lifted. Later, he accepted a professional tryout with Edmonton in September 2024 that became a one-year deal; Minnesota claimed him off waivers in December 2024 before Edmonton reclaimed him in February 2025. A left shoulder operation was reported in 2025, and in February 2026 he signed a PTO with the Hartford Wolf Pack, appearing in five games and recording three assists before departing the club in April 2026.
On the ice, Dermott’s profile is straightforward: a playmaking defender who can quarterback penalty-kill situations, shift to the right side when needed and move the puck effectively under various deployments.
