Travis Boyd's story

Growing up in Hopkins, Minnesota, Travis Boyd reached the NHL pathway early: at 17 he was the youngest player taken in the 2011 draft when Washington selected him 177th overall. That early selection set the timetable for a career that moved through college hockey into the professional ranks.

Boyd spent four seasons with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Big Ten, winning the conference championship in 2014–15 and earning a spot on the Big Ten second All-Star team that same season. After college he signed an entry-level deal with the Capitals to begin in 2015–16 and joined their AHL affiliate on a tryout to finish 2014–15, recording a goal and an assist in two games for Hershey.

He made his NHL debut on December 4, 2017, and notched his first NHL point on March 18, 2018. Boyd was part of the Washington group that captured the Stanley Cup on June 7, 2018, after appearing in eight regular-season games and one playoff game that year. Washington re-signed him subsequently, and he registered his first NHL goal on December 9, 2018, during a season in which he alternated between roster spots and scratches in the playoffs.

His journeyman phase began when Toronto signed him on October 10, 2020; he played 20 games that pandemic-shortened season (3 goals, 8 points) before being placed on waivers and claimed by Vancouver on March 22, 2021, where he added 2 goals in 19 games. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal with Arizona on August 3, 2021, and took on a larger role there, including time on the top power play. In 2021–22 he posted 10 goals and 34 points in 46 games and signed a two-year extension on March 5, 2022. After the franchise personnel moved to the Utah Hockey Club, Boyd signed with Minnesota on July 1, 2024, and spent most of 2024–25 in the AHL with the Iowa Wild (62 games, 53 points), also appearing in three NHL games with Minnesota. He then signed a one-year contract with Toronto on July 1, 2025.

On the ice, Boyd is known as a centre who can fill depth roles but also contribute offensively and on the power play when given opportunity. His résumé includes a Big Ten title, All-Star recognition at the college level and a Stanley Cup in 2018. Off the ice, the available record notes he is married to Kelsey and they have one daughter.
