Born in Blainville on February 25, 2001, Sam Poulin cut his teeth in Quebec’s minor hockey system and developed into a scorer and playmaker through the region’s elite youth programs. He moved from midget AAA with Collège Esther-Blondin Phénix into major junior hockey after being selected by the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the 2017 QMJHL Draft, and assumed increasing responsibility as he matured.
In Sherbrooke Poulin earned early leadership roles, becoming captain while still a teenager and spending several seasons in the QMJHL. A midseason trade in January 2021 sent him to the Val-d’Or Foreurs, closing out his junior career. Pittsburgh drafted him in the first round, 21st overall, in 2019 and signed him to an entry-level contract on September 22, 2019, setting the stage for his transition to professional hockey.
Poulin made his professional debut with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL during 2021–22. He reached the NHL on October 25, 2022, recording one assist in his debut for the Penguins against the Calgary Flames. The following seasons included setbacks from injuries: a high-ankle sprain on October 29, 2023 that sidelined him until mid-December, and a separate lower-body injury on February 3 that cost him additional time. Despite those interruptions, Pittsburgh re-signed him to a two-year extension on April 29, 2024.
On December 12, 2025, Pittsburgh traded Poulin and goaltender Tristan Jarry to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick. He finished the 2025–26 AHL season with the Bakersfield Condors, Edmonton’s affiliate, and entered free agency before agreeing to a one-year, two-way deal with the Montreal Canadiens on July 1, 2026.
Internationally, Poulin represented Canada’s under-18 team at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, winning gold, and at the 2019 U18 World Championships. As a right wing he blends hockey sense with a reliable shot and a willingness to play responsibly in his own end.
