Ryan Suter's story
Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, Ryan Suter was immersed in hockey from the start: his father, Bob, was part of the 1980 U.S. Olympic gold-medal team and his uncle Gary had an NHL career. Suter moved through local programs and the USA Hockey development system before choosing to play college hockey at the University of Wisconsin, balancing education and a path toward the professional ranks.
His stock rose enough to be selected seventh overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. After a season with the Badgers and a stint in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals during the NHL lockout, Suter made his NHL debut in 2005–06, notching his first assist in that first game and scoring his first NHL goal later that season.
Suter spent the early portion of his career establishing himself in Nashville, signing a multi-year extension in 2008 and becoming a regular on the back end. In July 2012 he signed a long-term deal with the Minnesota Wild and quickly became a cornerstone of their defence, logging heavy minutes in all situations and posting career highs in assists and points during his time there. After a buyout in 2021 he joined the Dallas Stars on a four-year contract, and later signed a one-year deal with the St. Louis Blues for 2024–25, where he served primarily in a third-pairing role while appearing in every regular-season game that year.
Internationally, Suter has worn the USA jersey many times: he was named to the 2010 Olympic roster and has represented the United States in numerous tournaments, collecting multiple gold medals across his international appearances. He has also been included in commemorative lists recognizing U.S. players.
Suter's on-ice profile is straightforward: he offers stability, dependable decision-making and the ability to eat minutes. Coaches have leaned on him for power-play and penalty-kill duties and for the steady, durable presence he brings to a defensive corps.
