Reese Johnson's story

He first learned his hockey in Saskatchewan, skating with the Saskatoon Blazers in the U18 AAA circuit before earning a spot with the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL. That move set the stage for his junior development and eventual leadership role with the club.

Johnson spent five seasons in Red Deer and was named captain for 2018–19, the same campaign in which he posted a career-high 27 goals and 53 points across 67 regular-season games. Not selected in the NHL Draft, he entered the professional ranks as an undrafted free agent and signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks on March 6, 2019.

He began his pro career with Chicago’s AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, joining them at the close of 2018–19 and recording four assists in six games. The pandemic-affected 2020–21 season saw him go to Blackhawks camp, start with Rockford’s camp, then be placed on Chicago’s taxi squad on January 21, 2021. That sequence culminated in his NHL debut on January 31, 2021, versus the Columbus Blue Jackets; he scored his first NHL goal on November 23 in a 5–2 loss to the Calgary Flames.

After six seasons inside the Blackhawks organization he left as a free agent and signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Minnesota Wild on July 1, 2024. Early in the 2024–25 campaign he appeared in three games for the Wild before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for future considerations and was assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.

His profile is that of a player who climbed the ranks through junior leadership and perseverance: an adaptable forward who has alternated between roles in the AHL and opportunities in the NHL, bringing the kind of experience teams use in depth and situational deployment.
