Robert Hagg's story
He was a busy teenager on the ice: Hägg began organized hockey with Gimo IF at 13 and quickly moved up the Swedish junior ladder, making a notable mark with MODO’s under-16s by leading all defencemen in assists and points and earning the league’s top defenceman honour.
The Philadelphia Flyers selected him 41st overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, and on 21 March 2014 Hägg signed a three-year entry-level deal. He finished 2013–14 with ten games for the Adirondack Phantoms and spent the 2014–15 season developing with the Flyers’ new AHL club, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, before establishing himself as an NHL call-up option.
Hägg made his NHL debut on 9 April 2017 versus Carolina and scored his first NHL goal on 21 December 2017 against Detroit. Early in his NHL tenure he became known for physical play: he led the league in hits (232) and was among rookie leaders in blocked shots before a lower-body injury sidelined him on 10 March 2018. He played a full 82-game slate in 2018–19, then experienced more fluctuating usage in subsequent seasons, signing a two-year, $3.2 million extension on 28 September 2020.
His career has included several moves: traded to Buffalo on 23 July 2021 in the deal for Rasmus Ristolainen, sent to Florida on 20 March 2022 where he assisted on Aleksander Barkov’s tying goal in his Panthers debut, then signing a one-year contract with Detroit on 25 July 2022. After a season in Detroit (38 games, first goal for the club on 22 February), Hägg agreed to terms with Anaheim for 2023–24, was used between the Ducks and their AHL affiliate San Diego, then signed a one-year deal with Vegas on 2 July 2024 and made a pair of appearances for the Golden Knights in November 2024 before spending most of the campaign with Henderson. He returned to Sweden by signing with Brynäs IF on 28 May 2025.
On the international stage Hägg represented Sweden throughout his junior career: he led defencemen in scoring at the 2012 U-17 event with six points, took bronze at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka tournament, won silver at the 2013 and 2014 World Junior Championships and finished fourth in 2015. He was named to Sweden’s senior team for the 2019 World Championship. His style is straightforward: a physically assertive, third-pairing defenceman who contributes on penalty kill minutes, accumulates hits and blocked shots, and provides defensive minutes more than offensive production.
