Robert Bortuzzo's story

Thunder Bay was where Robert Bortuzzo first cut his teeth on the ice, developing a physical, north-south game in junior circles. His time with the Fort William North Stars stands out: the club captured the SIJHL title and the Dudley Hewitt Cup during his season there, achievements that propelled him toward the major junior ranks.

Although selected by the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL Priority Selection, Bortuzzo completed the 2005–06 campaign with Fort William before joining Kitchener via a later transaction. Over three seasons with the Rangers he established himself as a dependable, stay-at-home blueliner and earned enough notice to be chosen 78th overall at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He entered the professional ranks with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL, gradually earning a larger role and a selection to the 2011 AHL All-Star Game. Late in 2011 he was recalled to the NHL and made his debut, thereafter alternating between the AHL and NHL while working to secure a steady spot in Pittsburgh’s lineup.

On March 2, 2015, Pittsburgh traded Bortuzzo to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Ian Cole. Injuries and roster moves marked several of his seasons in St. Louis, but he was part of the Blues organization when the club lifted the Stanley Cup in 2018–19. He later spent time with the New York Islanders and, on August 31, 2024, signed a one-year deal with the Utah Hockey Club.

In plain terms, Bortuzzo’s game has been built on physical engagement and situational reliability. He plays with bite in his own end, supports transitions when needed and fills a depth role that coaches turn to for stability on the back end.
