Rasmus Asplund's story
Growing up in Filipstad, Rasmus Asplund reached Sweden’s top level while still a teenager, earning his first SHL minutes with Färjestad BK during the 2014–15 season. Early on he established himself as a reliable pivot, the sort of player coaches trust in defensive situations and on the penalty kill.
Asplund’s play in Sweden drew NHL interest and he was selected in the second round, 33rd overall, at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. After continuing two more seasons in the SHL, he signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Buffalo Sabres on 23 May 2018 and moved into the Sabres’ development system.
His North American adjustment included stints in the AHL with the Rochester Americans and, because of the COVID-19 delay, a temporary loan back to Sweden: on 16 September 2020 he joined Västerås IK of HockeyAllsvenskan, notching 9 points in 14 games before returning to Buffalo. Over time his defensive metrics stood out, and following the 2021–22 campaign he was viewed among the league’s top two-way forward prospects and finished inside the top 20 in voting for the Frank J. Selke Trophy.
The 2022–23 season brought fewer opportunities in Buffalo — 27 regular-season games yielding 2 goals and 8 points — and at the NHL trade deadline, on 3 March 2023, he was dealt to the Nashville Predators for a seventh-round pick in the 2024 draft. After failing to receive a qualifying offer from Nashville, Asplund signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Florida Panthers on 5 July 2023 and spent two seasons in that organization.
Asplund’s game is defined by defensive awareness and versatility down the middle. He plays with restraint rather than flash, focusing on position, puck support and responsibility in his own end — traits that have carried him between the SHL, the AHL and the NHL and later back to Europe with HC Davos.
