Oliver Kylington's story
At 16 he etched his name into SHL history by scoring in September 2013, becoming the league's youngest goalscorer at 16 years, 4 months and 9 days. Born 19 May 1997 in Stockholm and raised in Sundbyberg, Oliver Kylington practised several sports as a child — handball, floorball and football among them — while being mentored early on by Johnny Oduya after an introduction from his father. His mother came to Sweden from Eritrea as a teenager, a detail often noted in accounts of his background.
Kylington moved through youth setups around Stockholm before making his professional debut with Färjestad BK in 2013–14. After signing a two-year extension with Färjestad in January 2014, his KHL rights were selected by Avangard Omsk in the 2014 KHL Junior Draft. He was loaned to AIK in the Allsvenskan in November 2014 to get more ice time, performed strongly among under-18 players, and in May 2015 agreed to a two-year deal intended to continue his development in Sweden.
Selected 60th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Kylington signed an entry-level contract on 15 July 2015 and was assigned to the Stockton Heat to begin his North American career. He made his NHL debut on 9 April 2016 against the Minnesota Wild and opened his NHL scoring account on 8 December 2018 versus the Nashville Predators. The 2021–22 campaign marked career highs in goals, assists and points, and he contributed three points in twelve playoff games as the Flames reached the second round in 2022.
Kylington did not play in 2022–23 and missed much of the following season for personal reasons, returning to game action on 25 January 2024 after an absence of eighteen months; he finished that season with three goals and five assists in 33 games and was named a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. As a free agent he signed a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche on 5 August 2024.
In 2024–25 injuries limited him to 13 games with Colorado, where he recorded one goal and three assists. On 6 March 2025 he was traded to the New York Islanders and immediately moved on to the Anaheim Ducks, for whom he played six games and logged one assist. Unsigned over the summer, he accepted a professional tryout with the Carolina Hurricanes on 28 August 2025 but was released before the regular season. On 18 October 2025 he returned to Sweden, signing a one-year contract with Djurgårdens IF. His game is defined by puck-moving intent and mobility on the blue line, traits visible from his early seasons in Sweden.
