Mark Friedman's story
Growing up in the Greater Toronto area, Mark Friedman moved from local minor teams into junior ranks with an early taste for producing offence from the blue line. His junior and junior-A seasons included goal totals and point production that kept him on scouts' radars and paved the way to higher levels of play.
Friedman spent two seasons in the USHL with the Waterloo Blackhawks and was named to the USHL Second All-Star Team in 2014. That same year he was taken 86th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. He then accepted a full hockey scholarship to Bowling Green, where three collegiate seasons earned him WCHA recognition: All-Rookie Team after his freshman year and First Team All-WCHA in his sophomore season.
The Flyers signed Friedman to an entry-level contract on March 21, 2017, and assigned him to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL to complete that season. He made his NHL debut on April 6, 2019, against the Carolina Hurricanes. In July 2020 Friedman agreed to a two-year, one-way extension with Philadelphia, remained with the club into the pandemic-delayed 2020–21 season, and was placed on waivers on February 23, 2021; Pittsburgh claimed him the next day.
In Pittsburgh he scored his first NHL goal against his former team in a 4–3 loss. His career afterward involved further moves: traded to the Vancouver Canucks on October 17, 2023, then sent to the Nashville Predators on February 7, 2025, during a season that saw him spend most of his time in the AHL with Abbotsford and Milwaukee. As a pending free agent Friedman elected to sign a two-year deal with Rögle BK of the SHL on June 5, 2025, beginning a European chapter to his professional career.
Across junior, collegiate and pro assignments, Friedman has consistently appeared as a defenseman who contributes offensively from the back end—scoring and setting up goals at multiple levels—which helped him progress from junior hockey through the NCAA and into professional leagues.
