Kevin Shattenkirk's story
Growing up in New Rochelle and attending Iona Prep Lower School, Kevin Shattenkirk skated in the New Jersey Devils youth system and took part in the 2002 Quebec Pee‑Wee tournament with a Devils minor team. Those early years set the stage for a university route rather than an immediate jump to the pros.
Selected 14th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, he opted to develop at Boston University after time with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. At BU he helped the Terriers to the 2009 national championship, served as captain in 2009–10 and signed an entry‑level NHL contract with Colorado in April 2010.
Shattenkirk made his NHL debut with Colorado in 2010 and was traded to the St. Louis Blues in February 2011 as part of a multi‑player deal. He became one of the Blues’ top offensive defensemen and, in February 2017, moved to the Washington Capitals in a deadline transaction. A free agent on July 1, 2017, he signed a four‑year contract with the New York Rangers; that contract was bought out in July 2019. He then joined the Tampa Bay Lightning on a one‑year deal for 2019–20 and won the Stanley Cup that season. In October 2020 he signed a three‑year contract with the Anaheim Ducks, later played for the Boston Bruins in 2023–24, and announced his retirement on December 10, 2024.
Internationally, Shattenkirk wore USA colours from his teen years: silver at the 2006 World U‑17 Hockey Challenge and silver at the 2007 IIHF U18 Championships, where he was named the tournament’s Best Defenseman and selected to the All‑Star Team. He served as an alternate captain at the 2009 World Junior Championship, led all tournament defensemen with nine points and was listed among Team USA’s top three players. He represented the United States at the 2011 World Championships—scoring in the opener on April 30, 2011—and was named to the U.S. Olympic team for 2014.
On the ice, Shattenkirk was defined by his offensive instincts from the blue line, the ability to move the puck and contribute on the power play. Across a career that spanned multiple teams, he combined point production with leadership roles and provided veteran presence in locker rooms late in his professional tenure.
