Klim Kostin's story

Born in Penza, Kostin moved to Moscow at age 12 to pursue hockey, living with his grandmother and joining Dynamo’s development system. He broke into junior hockey in 2015–16 with HK MVD in the MHL, posting 22 points in 30 games and establishing a reputation for size and skating ability.

Though selected first overall in the 2016 CHL Import Draft by the Kootenay Ice, Kostin elected to remain in Russia for 2016–17 with Dynamo Moscow. His season was cut short by shoulder surgery in January 2017 after a total of 18 games split between the senior club and Dynamo Balashikha, yet NHL Central Scouting still ranked him as the top European skater ahead of the 2017 draft.

St. Louis chose him 31st overall in June 2017. Following Dynamo’s July 2017 roster releases, Kostin signed a three‑year entry‑level deal with the Blues the next day. He made his NHL debut in November 2019 and scored his first NHL goal on 23 November 2019. His professional path has included assignments to the AHL and several trades: moved to Edmonton on 9 October 2022, then to Detroit on 29 June 2023 (signing a two‑year, $4 million contract on 1 July), and later traded to San Jose on 8 March 2024.

Kostin returned to the KHL ahead of the 2025–26 season, signing with Avangard Omsk on 3 November 2025 before being traded to CSKA Moscow on 25 January 2026; he extended with CSKA by agreeing to a three‑year contract on 30 April 2026. Internationally, he captained Russia’s U‑18 side at the 2016 IIHF World U18 Championship (four assists in five games, sixth place) and led the squad at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament that same year with seven points in five games, helping secure bronze. He also appeared in the CHL Canada/Russia Series, recording two points in five games.

Kostin’s playing style has been characterised as that of a power forward: he blends physical dimensions with mobility, able to finish scoring chances and set up teammates, traits that kept him highly ranked among European prospects.
