Jakub Vrana's story
Born in Prague on 28 February 1996, Vrána began skating at a local rink connected to a scout’s family and left home at 15 to continue his development in Sweden. He broke into professional hockey with Linköping HC during the 2012–13 season, appearing as one of the youngest foreign players to play in the SHL.
After splitting time between Linköping’s junior and senior squads, he climbed draft boards and was taken 13th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2014. Washington signed him to an entry-level deal but kept him in Sweden for another season before he moved to North America, where brief stints with the Hershey Bears preceded a full AHL season in 2015–16 that included wrist surgery and a strong return in the playoffs.
Vrána earned his first NHL recall late in 2016, debuted on 1 December and scored his inaugural NHL goal on 9 December. He made the Capitals’ roster for 2017–18 and played a role in their playoff run, scoring in the Stanley Cup Final as Washington captured the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 2018. He followed that with a career-best regular season in 2018–19 and a two-year contract extension in July 2019.
On 12 April 2021 he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings and immediately produced, collecting 11 points in 11 games and scoring four goals in a single game on 22 April. A three-year contract followed in August 2021, but injury limited him to 26 games that season. In March 2023 Detroit traded him to the St. Louis Blues, where he netted 10 goals in 20 games. The next seasons saw him shuttle between the NHL and AHL, including a two-game AHL suspension for cross-checking, and finish a contract year with 36 points in 42 AHL games.
Vrána’s game centres on offensive instincts, quickness and a scoring touch. He has shown an ability to slide into new lineups and generate chances rapidly, combining shot volume and finishing ability that have produced notable scoring bursts at various stops in his career.
