Jimmy Vesey's story
As a youngster in North Reading and the Boston area rinks, Jimmy Vesey developed a scoring touch that followed him to Harvard. Drafted 66th overall by Nashville in 2012 after his season with the South Shore Kings, he committed to four years at Harvard, finishing his collegiate career with 80 goals and 64 assists in 128 games and earning ECAC Player of the Year honours after 2014–15.
His senior season brought the Hobey Baker Award in 2016, having been a finalist the year before. The summer that followed saw his draft rights traded to Buffalo as teams jostled for exclusive negotiation time, but Vesey declined to sign an NHL entry deal immediately; he took unrestricted free agency and ultimately inked with the New York Rangers on August 20, 2016.
Vesey’s professional path has been itinerant. He scored his first NHL goal on October 17, 2016 and recorded a first career hat trick in March 2018 while with the Rangers. On July 1, 2019 he was traded back to Buffalo. Subsequent stops included one‑year contracts and roster moves: Toronto in October 2020, claimed by Vancouver off waivers in March 2021, a professional tryout and later a contract with New Jersey in late 2021, and a return to the Rangers in 2022 that led to a two‑year extension in January 2023. On March 1, 2025 he was part of a multi‑player trade to the Colorado Avalanche, where he appeared in ten regular‑season games.
Unable to secure an NHL contract following that season, Vesey moved to Switzerland and signed a two‑year deal with Genève‑Servette HC on August 4, 2025. Internationally, he helped the United States win gold at the 2013 World Junior Championship and earned bronze at the 2015 IIHF World Championship.
On the ice, Vesey is defined by his ability to finish and adapt; from leading roles at Harvard to depth assignments in the NHL, he has filled different offensive and checking responsibilities while providing occasional goal production.
