Jack Thompson's story
When the OHL season was delayed in 2020, Thompson crossed the Atlantic to Sweden and joined Surahammars IF in Division 1, producing nine goals and nine assists across 18 games — an early sign of his ability to chip in offensively from the blue line. Born March 19, 2002, he played 115 junior games with the Sudbury Wolves before moving toward the professional ranks.
Tampa Bay selected him 93rd overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and signed him to a three-year entry-level contract on May 18, 2021. He received his first taste of pro hockey with one appearance for the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL, notching an assist in that debut.
Thompson reached the NHL on January 6, 2024, making his first appearance with the Lightning against Boston. On March 7, 2024, Tampa Bay traded him along with a 2024 third-round pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Anthony Duclair; he then made his Sharks debut on April 15, 2024 in a game versus the Edmonton Oilers. He subsequently re-signed to a one-year contract with San Jose.
The next shift arrived on March 5, 2026, when San Jose traded Thompson to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Jett Woo. He is currently under contract to Vancouver while playing with the Abbotsford Canucks in the American Hockey League.
As a defenceman, Thompson has shown the capacity to generate offence, most notably during his loan in Sweden where he produced a point-per-game rate. His trajectory through junior hockey, into the AHL and into NHL appearances traces the path of a young rearguard still carving out a sustained role at the highest level.
