Jesse Puljujarvi's story
Moved to Tornio at age four, Puljujärvi took to skating and hockey there before relocating alone to Oulu at thirteen to join Kärpät’s junior program. A femur fracture interrupted one junior season, but he still became a regular in the U20 ranks as a mid‑teen and helped his club on its path through Finland’s youth championships.
Puljujärvi signed his first professional deal with Oulun Kärpät in May 2014 and appeared for the senior team that autumn, including in Champions Hockey League play. He set club records as one of Kärpät’s youngest players and youngest point scorers. After two seasons in Liiga, Edmonton selected him fourth overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and he soon signed an entry‑level contract with the Oilers.
His North American career has included stints in both the NHL and AHL: initial seasons in Edmonton alternated with time in Bakersfield, a return to Kärpät for 2019–20 where he led the team in scoring, then a two‑year re‑entry to the Oilers beginning in 2020. In February 2023 he was traded to Carolina. Over 2023–25 he moved between organisations, including Pittsburgh and its AHL affiliate Wilkes‑Barre/Scranton, a professional tryout with Charlotte (the Panthers’ AHL team), and a subsequent two‑way NHL deal with Florida; in July 2025 he signed a two‑year contract with Genève‑Servette HC in Switzerland.
Internationally, Puljujärvi figured prominently for Finland’s junior teams: silver at the 2015 IIHF U18s, then in 2016 winning gold at both the World Junior Championship and the U18 tournament — an uncommon double — and earning Best Forward and MVP honours at the World Juniors that year.
Observers describe his strengths as offensive instincts and a tendency to hold possession and attempt dekes; analytics noted challenges with puck carrying and a willingness to take risks. Time in the AHL and adjustments to the North American game helped him find better shooting positions and improve his play in the neutral zone.
