John Ludvig's story
A childhood spent between Liberec and British Columbia left John Ludvig with an early familiarity with both Czech roots and Canadian hockey culture. Son of Jan Ludvig, who played in the NHL for New Jersey and Buffalo, John trained in his father’s backyard with weights, tires and sledgehammers and developed primarily as a defenceman, though he briefly tried the goal crease during his youth.
His path through junior hockey required persistence. Passed over in the WHL bantam draft at 14 because of his size, he climbed the ranks from Junior B and earned a spot on the Portland Winterhawks’ protected list at 16. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau rated him 48th among North American defencemen before the 2018 draft, and on 22 June 2019 the Florida Panthers selected him 69th overall; he later attended their Development Camp.
Back with Portland for 2019–20, Ludvig was named the Winterhawks’ 44th captain. He closed his major junior career with 17 goals and 45 assists in 60 games, ranking fourth among WHL defencemen in goals, and secured a place on the WHL Western Conference First All‑Star Team. The Panthers signed him to an entry‑level contract on 30 March 2020.
Assigned to the AHL in Syracuse, he led the Crunch blueliners with two goals and eight points in 13 games during the 2020–21 campaign; his first professional goal — the game‑winner — came on 1 March versus Rochester. After a two‑year, two‑way deal with Florida on 17 July 2023, Pittsburgh claimed him off waivers on 9 October 2023.
Ludvig made his NHL debut with the Penguins on 24 October 2023 in a 4–1 loss to Dallas and spent most of the season as a depth option, often the team’s seventh defenceman. He scored his first NHL goal on 14 February 2024 against the Florida Panthers and finished that season with three goals and five points in 33 games. Claimed by the Colorado Avalanche on 5 October 2024, he later chose to return to the Czech Republic, signing a three‑year contract with HC Dynamo Pardubice on 23 July 2025, where his father Jan served as the club’s skills coach.
On the ice Ludvig combines physical play with reliable penalty killing and the ability to join the attack — traits that were highlighted through his junior success and early professional seasons.
