Jack Johnson's story
Born in Indianapolis on January 13, 1987, Jack Johnson grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he developed in Little Caesar's minor programs before moving to Shattuck-Saint Mary's in Minnesota prior to eighth grade. He progressed through the USA Hockey National Team Development Program for two seasons, gaining early exposure to international junior tournaments.
Selected third overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, Johnson opted to continue at the University of Michigan. His freshman year set school marks for a rookie defenseman in points and penalty minutes, and his sophomore season produced 16 goals and CCHA recognition as the conference's top offensive defenseman. With the Hurricanes needing immediate reinforcements, his NHL rights were traded to the Los Angeles Kings in September 2006 alongside Oleg Tverdovsky in exchange for Tim Gleason and Éric Bélanger.
Johnson turned professional in March 2007 and broke into the Kings' lineup that spring. He established himself as a two-way blueliner who combined physical play with offensive contributions, posting career highs in 2010–11 and earning a seven-year extension in January 2011. Traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 23, 2012, in the deal that sent Jeff Carter to Los Angeles, Johnson embraced a leading role in Columbus, logging heavy minutes and helping the club reach the playoffs in 2014 while producing steadily on the scoresheet.
A free-agent signing by the Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2018, Johnson's five-year deal ended with a buyout in October 2020. A one-year contract with the New York Rangers followed, cut short by season-ending surgery in March 2021. Invited to Colorado's camp on a PTO in 2021, he earned a one-year contract, recorded the team's opening goal of the 2021–22 season and played his 1,000th NHL game on March 1, 2022. Initially a healthy scratch in the playoffs, he returned to the lineup and was part of the Avalanche's run to the Stanley Cup in 2022.
Johnson spent the 2022–23 season in Chicago before being traded back to Colorado and later re-signing for one year; he returned to Columbus on July 2, 2024, and served in a bottom-pairing rotational role the following season. After an unsuccessful PTO with the Minnesota Wild in 2025 and subsequent release, Johnson transitioned out of playing when he joined the Vancouver Canucks as a professional scout in January 2026. His on-ice profile remained consistent: a defensively responsible, physical defenseman who could also contribute offensively when needed.
