Julien Gauthier's story
Growing up in Pointe‑aux‑Trembles, Julien Gauthier came through Quebec’s junior ranks before Val‑d’Or selected him sixth overall in the 2013 QMJHL draft. As a young right wing he experienced a steep learning curve early, taking part in Val‑d’Or’s run to the President’s Cup and the 2014 Memorial Cup, including a triple‑overtime semifinal that remains one of the tournament’s longest games.
Gauthier developed into a reliable junior scorer, posting 41 goals in 2015–16 and being traded in January 2017 to the Saint John Sea Dogs, where he helped capture another President’s Cup and appeared at the 2017 Memorial Cup. His junior résumé made him an NHL first‑round prospect: Carolina selected him 21st overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and signed him to a three‑year entry‑level contract on 9 July 2016.
He spent significant time with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL and was part of Charlotte’s 2019 Calder Cup championship group. Gauthier made his NHL debut with Carolina in October 2019 and has since moved via trade and free agency: to the New York Rangers in February 2020, to Ottawa in February 2023, and then signing a two‑year deal with the New York Islanders in July 2023. His career has included multiple recalls, waivers and AHL assignments (Hartford, Bridgeport, Springfield). In February 2026 he was traded to St. Louis and played with Springfield; on 25 April 2026 he scored an overtime game‑winner in an Atlantic Division quarterfinal game during the AHL playoffs. In July 2026 he agreed to a one‑year contract with Brynäs IF in Sweden.
