Ian Mitchell's story
Selected 57th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by Chicago, Ian Mitchell chose the collegiate path at the University of Denver and quickly established himself as a puck-moving presence on the blue line. His first season in Denver saw him drive transition plays and contribute on the power play, helping the Pioneers capture the 2018 NCHC Tournament title and a spot in the NCAA field.
Mitchell grew into leadership roles during his time with Denver, serving as alternate captain and later captain. He steadily increased his offensive output and reached a collegiate peak in 2019–20 with 10 goals and 22 assists, recognition that led to AHCA First‑Team All‑American honours. With the 2020 postseason cancellations, he elected to turn professional and signed an entry‑level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on April 11, 2020.
Mitchell made Chicago's opening roster for his delayed rookie year, recorded his first NHL point on January 22, 2021 and scored his first NHL goal on February 11, 2021, finishing that season with three goals and four assists in 39 games. In subsequent seasons he split time between the NHL and AHL; he posted notable offensive numbers with the Rockford IceHogs and gained playoff experience in the AHL while appearing sporadically for the Blackhawks.
On June 26, 2023 Chicago traded Mitchell to the Boston Bruins, and he signed a one‑year, two‑way deal on July 10, 2023. His tenure with Boston involved moving between the NHL club and the Providence Bruins; he produced solid totals in Providence’s 2023–24 regular season and playoffs and signed a one‑year extension with Boston on June 23, 2024. Later, he signed with Detroit for 2025–26, was assigned to Grand Rapids, and on March 12, 2026 was traded to Tampa Bay and reported to Syracuse.
At the end of that contract Mitchell opted to continue his career in Switzerland, signing a two‑year deal with SC Bern of the National League on April 21, 2026. He is best described as a mobile, puck‑moving defenceman who looks to create offence from the back end while supporting his teammates in transition.
