Ivan Fedotov's story
Born in Finland and raised in Saint Petersburg, Ivan Fedotov came up through Russian club systems, including time with SKA and CSKA youth programs and a stint in the Pervaia Liga with Kristall Elektrostal. He made his KHL debut for Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk on 12 December 2014, taking his first steps at the professional level.
Selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh round, 188th overall, of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Fedotov remained in Russia to develop. He moved from Neftekhimik to Salavat Yulaev Ufa on 4 May 2016, and after spending significant minutes with affiliate Toros Neftekamsk and elsewhere, he was traded to Traktor Chelyabinsk on 6 May 2019, where he continued to hone his game.
A transfer to CSKA Moscow followed on 2 May 2021. The 2021–22 campaign was decisive: Fedotov took on the starting role, appearing in 26 regular-season games with a 14–10–2 record, a 2.00 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. He then posted 16 wins in 22 postseason games as CSKA captured its second Gagarin Cup; he was also named a finalist for the KHL’s top goaltender.
On 7 May 2022 he signed a one-year entry-level contract with the Flyers, but his move to North America was halted when he was arrested on 1 July 2022 for alleged evasion of military service and subsequently required to serve; he missed that entire season. After completing his compulsory duties, he signed a two-year deal with CSKA on 8 July 2023, a contract that later became the subject of formal disputes between the KHL and the NHL. CSKA terminated the contract on 28 March 2024, and Fedotov joined the Flyers for the remainder of the 2023–24 season.
Fedotov made his NHL debut on 1 April 2024, relieving Samuel Ersson and making 19 saves on 21 shots in a 4–3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders. Internationally, he was named to the roster of Russian Olympic Committee athletes for the 2022 Winter Olympics. As a player, he is known for quick lateral movement and composure under playoff pressure, traits that helped him seize starting duties in the KHL.
