Garrett Wilson's story
Drafted 107th overall in 2009, Garrett Wilson built his early identity in major junior hockey with Owen Sound, reaching the 2011 Memorial Cup and earning a spot on the OHL First All-Star Team for 2010–11. Born in Ontario in 1991, he developed into a physical winger during those formative years and began to attract attention for a role that would follow him into the pros.
Wilson signed his first entry-level NHL contract on June 1, 2011, and over the next seasons he alternated between the AHL and the NHL while carving out a niche as a tough, stay-on-the-ice competitor. He was selected by the Florida Panthers in the 2009 draft and spent time within that organization’s system, including the 2015–16 season when he split duties between Florida and its AHL affiliate in Portland.
Following his stint with Florida, Wilson moved on as a free agent, inking a one-year, two-way deal with Pittsburgh on July 7, 2016. Assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he took on leadership roles there, serving as an alternate and later as captain, and re-signed with the Penguins organization in 2017. He scored his first NHL goal on February 9, 2019 versus Tampa Bay after a recall during the 2018–19 campaign. Subsequent contracts led him to the Maple Leafs organization for 2019–20 (playing with the Marlies) and then to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in 2021.
Wilson remained in the AHL with Lehigh Valley, signing a one-year contract in July 2025 before earning a two-way NHL deal with the Philadelphia Flyers on March 5, 2026. He made his Flyers debut on March 19, 2026 against the Los Angeles Kings, nearly seven years after his prior NHL appearance on April 16, 2019, and was later named the Flyers' nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. In July 2026 he signed another one-year AHL contract with the Phantoms and was re-signed by Philadelphia two months later to a one-year, two-way deal.
Known around the leagues as an enforcer and nicknamed “Sheriff,” Wilson’s game centres on physicality, net-front work and veteran leadership. He is not primarily a high scorer; his value lies in heavy minutes on the forecheck, willingness to engage physically and protecting teammates, qualities that have kept him in demand across AHL and NHL organizations.
