Givani Smith's story
Growing up in Toronto, Smith developed a reputation for playing with grit and physicality during his junior years. Over four seasons in the OHL with Barrie, Guelph and Kitchener, he produced 135 points in 236 games and amassed 411 penalty minutes, leading the league in penalty minutes in both 2015–16 and 2016–17.
He stepped into the professional ranks with Grand Rapids, tallying 13 points in 64 games as a rookie in 2018–19. Strong showings in the AHL earned him a call-up to Detroit on 25 October 2019, and he made his NHL debut that same night. His early NHL experience included multiple recalls and reassignments between the Griffins and the Red Wings.
Smith scored his first NHL goal on 14 January 2020 against Thomas Greiss. After further stints with the Red Wings organization he was traded to the Florida Panthers on 19 December 2022. As a free agent he signed a two-year, $1.6 million deal with the San Jose Sharks on 1 July 2023, notching his inaugural goal for San Jose on 16 November and finishing that season with 36 appearances.
The 2024–25 period saw several transactions: after being placed on waivers in December 2024, he was dealt to the Colorado Avalanche on 9 December 2024 in a multi-player, multi-pick trade and debuted the next day. He was reassigned to the AHL’s Colorado Eagles on 28 December 2024, then traded to the Philadelphia Flyers on 7 March 2025 and sent to play with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Unsigned in the subsequent off-season, Smith accepted a professional tryout with the Carolina Hurricanes on 28 August 2025, earned a one-year, $775,000 contract and spent the year with the Chicago Wolves, recording 2 goals and 5 points in 25 games. On 2 July 2026 he signed his first overseas contract with the Shanghai Dragons of the KHL.
Internationally he has represented Jamaica at the Amerigol LATAM Cup, reflecting his Jamaican heritage, and he is the younger brother of Gemel Smith. On the ice, his game is straightforward: physical forechecking, frequent hits and a role that centres on energy, agitation and protecting teammates rather than scoring volume.
