Erik Johnson's story

Growing up in the Bloomington area, Minnesota, Erik Johnson moved from prep hockey to the U.S. National Team Development Program, where he established himself as a large two‑way defenseman who could drive play from the back end and contribute on the scoresheet. His NTDP years showcased his mix of physical play and puck skills and set the stage for top prospect status.

Johnson spent one season with the University of Minnesota before entering the professional ranks; his calendar year of college hockey did not prevent him from being chosen first overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. After finishing that freshman year he signed an entry‑level deal in April 2007 and soon joined the St. Louis Blues for his rookie NHL campaign.

His pro career has been marked by productive stretches, serious injuries and a major trade that reshaped his path. He broke in with St. Louis, missed an entire season following a serious knee injury, and was dealt in February 2011 to the Colorado Avalanche. In Colorado he grew into a key, long‑term member of the blueline, earning multi‑year extensions, logging heavy minutes, and reaching milestones such as being the first defenseman from his draft class to hit 300 points. The high point came in 2022 when he and the Avalanche captured the Stanley Cup. Later he signed in Buffalo, was traded to Philadelphia where he played his 1,000th NHL game, returned to Colorado at the 2025 trade deadline, and announced his retirement in October 2025.

Internationally Johnson represented the United States from under‑17 levels onward, collecting gold at under‑18 worlds, earning tournament honours at the World Junior Championship, winning Olympic silver in 2010 and later being named to the U.S. roster for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

On the ice he combined size and reach with steady puck-moving ability. Routinely trusted with significant ice time and power‑play duties, his game evolved to emphasise mobility and position while still offering physical presence and occasional goal scoring.
