Erik Brannstrom's story

Born in Eksjö on 2 September 1999, Brännström came up through HV71’s system, debuting in Sweden’s under-16 competitions in 2013–14 and appearing in the SHL during the 2015–16 campaign. Those formative seasons with HV71 shaped his development as a defenseman comfortable handling the puck from the back end.

Taken 15th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, he signed a three-year entry-level contract on 16 July 2017 and continued his transition to North American professional hockey. He split time between the AHL and NHL organizations early on and earned a spot in the 2019 AHL All-Star Game.

On 25 February 2019 Brännström was included in the trade that sent Mark Stone to Vegas and brought him to the Ottawa Senators; he was assigned to Belleville before making his NHL debut for Ottawa on 14 March 2019 versus St. Louis. His tenure with the Senators involved multiple recalls and reassignments, power-play duties, and moments of adversity—most notably a broken hand sustained while blocking a shot in November 2021.

During the pandemic-affected 2020–21 window he was loaned to the SCL Tigers of the Swiss National League, recording 8 points in 10 games before returning to Ottawa. He scored his first NHL goal on 24 February 2021 against Montreal and produced his most durable season in 2023–24, appearing in a career-high 76 regular-season games, reaching his 200th NHL game on 18 November 2023, and finishing with 20 points.

A sequence of moves in 2024–25 saw him sign with Colorado, be traded to Vancouver, and shuttle between the Canucks and their AHL affiliate—registering his first point for Vancouver on 22 October 2024 and his first goal for the club on 12 November 2024—before later trades sent him to New York and Buffalo. On 26 May he committed to Lausanne HC in the Swiss NL through the 2027–28 season. On the ice, Brännström combines power-play aptitude with a willingness to block shots and take on defensive assignments; he has also been paired frequently with Vincent Desharnais during his time in Vancouver.
