Emil Bemstrom's story
Raised in Trosa, Emil Bemström took his first organized steps in hockey with Järna SK before moving into Leksands IF’s development system, where he climbed through the junior ranks. He broke into pro hockey in 2016–17 with Leksand, a season interrupted by an inflammation of the pericardium that sidelined him for about two months. After Leksand dropped to HockeyAllsvenskan, Bemström continued to develop, scoring his first league goals and earning interest from NHL scouts.
Selected 117th overall in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft by Columbus, he left Leksand and signed a two-year deal with Djurgårdens IF in May 2018, returning to the SHL. The 2018–19 campaign was a breakout: he scored his first SHL goal in the season opener and went on to lead the league in goals and power-play goals, winning Rookie of the Year and the regular-season scoring title.
Columbus signed him to an entry-level contract on 15 May 2019, and Bemström made the Blue Jackets roster as a rookie, finishing with ten goals in 56 games. With the 2020–21 season affected by the pandemic, he accepted a loan to HIFK in Finland, where he produced strongly before returning to North America. His first NHL hat trick came on 3 May 2021 against Nashville.
The following years saw Bemström move between the NHL and AHL. He agreed to a two-year extension with Columbus in August 2022, led the AHL in scoring with Cleveland before being recalled, and was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on 23 February 2024. He scored on his Penguins debut on 25 February 2024 and split time thereafter between Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, posting a productive AHL season that included selection to the 2025 AHL All-Star Classic. After the 2024–25 season he became an unrestricted free agent and subsequently signed a one-year deal with SC Bern for 2025–26.
Internationally, Bemström represented Sweden at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2016, at the 2019 World Juniors and at the senior 2022 IIHF World Championship. His game is defined by an eye for the net and a natural scoring instinct: he consistently looks to be in the right areas to finish chances.
