Daniel Sprong's story
Growing up in Amsterdam, Daniel Sprong moved with his family to L'Île‑Bizard, Quebec in 2005 to continue his hockey development. As a youth he competed in Quebec's pee‑wee tournaments and put up eye‑catching numbers in the Lac St‑Louis midget espoir circuit, recording 104 points in 30 games at that level.
Charlottetown selected him 13th overall in the 2013 QMJHL draft, and he made an immediate impact with the Islanders, leading the club in scoring as a rookie and earning a spot on the league's All‑Rookie Team. He followed with an 88‑point season and an invitation to the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, which helped push him into the NHL conversation and led to Pittsburgh taking him 46th overall in the 2015 draft.
Sprong signed a three‑year entry‑level deal on 28 August 2015 and surprised by making Pittsburgh's opening roster, debuting on 8 October and scoring his first NHL goal a week later. After 18 games with the Penguins he returned to junior and later joined the AHL Wilkes‑Barre/Scranton club for a playoff stint. Professionally his path has included trades and recalls: dealt to Anaheim on 3 December 2018 for Marcus Pettersson, moved to Washington on 24 February 2020 for Christian Djoos, and later traded to Seattle on 21 March 2022 in the deal for Marcus Johansson.
Between NHL stops he spent time in the AHL refining his game—11 goals and 27 points in 39 games with the San Diego Gulls when asked to play a more complete two‑way role—and posted a career high of 46 points in 66 games with the Kraken. On 1 July 2023 he signed a one‑year, $2 million contract with Detroit and produced 18 goals and 25 assists in 76 games. The following season he signed with Vancouver, returned to Seattle in November 2024, was assigned to Coachella Valley where he scored 25 points in 19 games, and was traded to New Jersey on 7 March 2025; he then signed in the KHL with CSKA Moscow on 23 July 2025 before being moved to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg.
Internationally, Sprong has declined to represent the Netherlands in order to preserve eligibility for Canada and has not taken part in international tournaments. On the ice his profile is straightforward: an offensively driven winger with a knack for finding scoring chances and producing points, while teams have periodically asked him to round out his two‑way play.
