Derek Ryan's story
Growing up in Spokane, Derek Ryan followed a steady climb through junior hockey before shifting to the Canadian university route. He played for the Spokane Braves in the KIJHL, then four seasons with the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL, and when NHL interest lagged he opted for four years with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
At Alberta (2007–2011) Ryan developed into a top CIS performer, earning West MVP honours in 2010–11 and a spot on the All-Canadian First Team. Undrafted, he launched his professional career in Europe in 2011–12 with Alba Volán Székesfehérvár in the EBEL, then moved to EC VSV where he led the league in goals and amassed 84 points, collecting the Ron Kennedy Trophy for 2013–14.
His next step was the Swedish Hockey League: signing with Örebro HK for 2014–15, Ryan became the centrepiece of that offence and finished the season as the SHL's top scorer with 60 points, also being named Forward of the Year and league MVP. Those achievements brought NHL attention and in June 2015 he signed his first NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, making his debut at 29 and scoring his first NHL goal against Cory Schneider.
Ryan spent parts of three seasons with Carolina before joining the Calgary Flames in July 2018, where he settled into a third-line centre role and proved a reliable special-teams player and faceoff specialist. In July 2021 he signed with the Edmonton Oilers; highlights there include a hat-trick on 26 February 2022. In January 2025 he cleared waivers and was assigned to the Bakersfield Condors, and he announced his retirement from the NHL on 5 September 2025.
On the ice, Ryan built his career on adaptability and consistency: able to play both wing and centre, he contributed in all situations, won a high percentage of draws and provided steady two-way play rather than flash.
