Chris Wagner's story
Growing up in Walpole and skating with the South Shore Kings, Chris Wagner made his mark early in junior hockey, appearing in the Quebec pee-wee tournament and posting standout offensive numbers as an 18-year-old that helped his team win a division crown. He finished high school at Xaverian Brothers and used his junior success to earn a place in NCAA hockey.
Wagner committed to Colgate in the ECAC, where he quickly established himself as a reliable two-way forward. He paced the freshman rookies on his team in scoring, then followed with a breakout season that put him near the top of the conference and earned him Second All-Star Team honours and a nomination as a finalist for best defensive forward. Those collegiate accomplishments led Anaheim to select him in the fifth round of the 2010 draft and to sign him to an entry-level deal in April 2012.
His professional debut came in the AHL with Norfolk, and repeated recalls to Anaheim produced his NHL debut on October 17, 2014. Wagner settled into a fourth-line checking role, shuttling between the NHL and the AHL while developing his physical game. Claimed off waivers by Colorado in November 2015 and later reclaimed by Anaheim in 2016, he was traded to the New York Islanders at the 2018 deadline and then signed with his hometown Boston Bruins as a free agent that July, posting career highs in goals and points during the 2018–19 season and securing a contract extension in late 2019.
After seasons split between Boston and Providence, Wagner returned to the Avalanche organization in 2023 but suffered a ruptured Achilles during offseason training that kept him out of play for an extended period. He resumed game action in the AHL with Colorado’s affiliate before choosing to continue his career in the AHL, signing a two-year deal with the Springfield Thunderbirds in July 2025 and being named team captain for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.
Wagner’s game is straightforward: a physical, defensively minded forward who brings energy, heavy checking and reliable positioning on the fourth line rather than top-line scoring. He is valued for work ethic, forechecking and the kind of steady defensive play coaches trust in tight minutes.
